Long Service award for school cleaner

BEXHILL resident Linda Gunstone has received a long service award for her time at Chantry Primary School.

Recently retired Linda was presented with her award certificate by Cllr Bob Lacey O.B.E, at a special awards ceremony at Lewes in May.

Linda worked as a cleaner at the school for twenty eight years and during her time there saw many changes including the arrival and departure of four different head teachers, and the introduction of computers and teaching assistants who are now present in every class.

Along with the many changes she witnessed at the school, was the occasional bit of excitement like the time a World War Two bomb was discovered during a school break in the late eighties!

She said: "The original school incorporated an old police house and cells. We used the cells for storing equipment and the bomb was found in there."

The bomb disposal squad was called in and the bomb was made safe.

She said she will miss working at the school as she had "really enjoyed it".
