Lorry load of immigrants still being assessed

THE 11 asylum-seekers detained by police after they were released from a German-registered lorry at Ravenside retail park are being assessed by immigration officers.

Police said this week that the case of the Austrian lorry driver was also being assessed by the immigration service.

Haulage companies found guilty of bringing illegal immigrants into the country faced fines of 2,000 per head.

Last week s Observer told how bystanders watched as the immigrants, including children, jumped from the back of a lorry in the Ravenside car park.
