A third of women say they suspect their male counterparts are paid more money than them for doing exactly the same job.

The research, which was commissioned by employment law specialist Slater and Gordon, asked 2000 UK workers about their attitudes towards fair pay in the workplace.

These sobering statistics follow a recent Government announcement that employers with 250 or more employees will need to report on the gender pay gap in their workforce by April 2018.

The gender pay gap currently stands at 19.2 per cent. The introduction of equal pay audits is likely to highlight further the difference between men and women’s salaries, particularly in certain sectors

Sex is a “protected characteristic” under the Equality Act and it is unlawful to discriminate against an individual at work because of their gender. In addition, paying men and women who do the same work or work of equal value differently is unlawful.
