Man dead in flat fire

A man has died after a fire in his basement flat.

The blaze in his Nelson Road home broke out shortly after 3am today (Thursday).

Firefighters rescued the man from the burning flat and was given resuscitation treatment before being taken to hospital where he died.

Seven other people living in the smoke-filled block were led to safety.

About 30 firefighters were at the scene and managed to get the flames under control by 4am.

Crew manager Tony Giles said: "It was a severe fire with a great deal of smoke logging in the other flats.

"The man was rescued and given first aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) but he died in hospital."

Police and firefighters are at Nelson Road investigating the cause of the fire.
