Manor Gardens win top award

MANOR Gardens have won Bexhill the top Silver Gilt award in the parks category of South East In Bloom.

Head gardener John Willis, from contractors John O'Conner was at Wednesday's awards ceremony at L'Venue at Chichester.

The ceremony was attended by Town Mayor Cllr Joy Hughes, Sandra Melvin, who chairs Bexhill In Bloom and Bexhill's entry in South East In Bloom and Brian Grifffiths of Rother.

Manor Gardens was overall winner of Parks Recreation/Small category; Bexhill gained Silver and was joint third in Large Towns/Small City over 35,001 category, Horsham retaining its class title; Barbara Echlin won the Royal Horticultural Society "Grow Your Own" Discretionary Award.

Christian environmentalist Barbara's top award in their class was for her innovative front garden at Thornbank Crescent which blends flowers with fruit and vegetables.

Judges particularly admired Barbara's skilful companion planting which combines the beautiful with the productive.

The Town Mayor said on her return: "We are absolutely over the moon! We are enormously thrilled that Manor Gardens have been acknowledged in this way - and the work of Barbara Echlin and that Bexhill has got a Silver.

"We started off early this morning but we have been so well received that it's been a brilliant day.

"We are very proud of Bexhill."

Sandra Melvin said: "We are very grateful to John O'Conner for their help in getting Bexhill a win and proud of Barbara Echlin for her Grow Your Own win.

"For Bexhill to gain a Silver in Large Towns was a bonus."
