Midsummer success at St Mary's

The fragrant smell of bacon and sizzling sausages lured visitors inside the gate to the Midsummer Madness fair held at St Mary's in Wrestwood Road.

Once inside many succumbed to the barbecue skills of David Riley, Andy Daughtery, Jack Letts and Martin Elwood as they produced perfect bacon rolls and hot dogs with fried onions and relish.

It's the fourth year they've done it but the barbecue is just one of many attractions at the fair which has become one of the most popular events in the area.

At the entrance itself was Alan Grey who said: "There has been loads of people - it has been well supported, so we are very pleased."

Further inside was Lee-Ann Govender and Gail Wattleworth who were doing temporary tattoes and henna painting, then Lucky Dip and Play Your Cards Right, and the music and film stall run by Emily Lawes. Also there were Melanie and Bethany Witham at the book stall, with Rob Ley and Wendy Smith. Diane Haines was selling jewellery while Ken Jempson and wife Marion with grand-daughter Tazman were featuring woodcraft, and Jan Wyatt had a selection of homemade cards and craft.

Organiser Sue Munn commented: "It is fantastic - and the weather has held up too. I want to say thank-you to everyone that has supported us. We get a great response from the local community and they are so supportive with donations to help us out and by coming here as well...it is lovely.

"We try to create a really fun time for everybpody so there is something for all ages.

"We have got a really good supportive staff - they go out of their way to help us out with stalls. This is something we think about all year

- I will probably start thinking about the Christmas fair on Monday.

"I would like to say a big thank you to everybody really - all the local businesses that sponsored us and helped by advertising in our brochure. I think everyone has been great - and we also have the services of Eddie McCall who is doing all our announcing today, we have Bexhill Rotary doing Hoop La and candy floss, and we are always very grateful for the support they offer us as well.

"It is quite overwhelming. When I saw the gate this morning and the queue that was waiting to come in - it was amazing.

"This year we have introduced the fancy dress parade, which is a fun thing for children and has gone really well, and we have also brought back arena events because we thought it was nice to have local dancing

- we have the Glimmer Stars here and Lacey Theatre Arts. Then there is a bouncy castle, cake stall, strawberries and cream, and champagne raffle."
