MP checks out Tesco's 'green' initiatives

BEXHILL and Battle MP Greg Barker went backstage at Tesco's, Ravenside, to see for himself just how 'green' the store is.

Greg was shown behind the scenes to observe the store's "going green", and cutting out landfill efforts.

He was taken on a tour of the premisses by store manager Nick Fox, who explained that the they work they are doing is reducing CO2 emissions and saving money.

A new lighting system installed on the shop floor uses less power but is just as bright, and special draft excluders prevent heat from escaping when lorries back into the loading area.

The store is also improving its recycling and food waste record.

Bexhill Tesco's ultimate aim is to cut out sending waste to landfill completely, a goal applauded by Greg who has been fighting landfill proposals at Ashdown Brickworks since 2001.

The visit was of particular interest for Greg as he has been appointed as Minister of State for Climate Change in the new Coalition Government.

Greg said: "I was very impressed with the 'green' steps being taken by our local Tesco's, and the commitment shown by all the staff, and I am looking forward to watching their progress further.

"If we are to reduce the rubbish we send to landfill, we must support more initiatives like these."
