New hub of creative activity proposal for Bexhill

College DV8 Sussex and its partners are looking to convert the old Jobs Centre into The Bexhill Hive – a place for young adults to learn new skills and express their creativity.

Permission is currently being sought from Rother District Council to change the use of the St Leonards Road building so DV8 can move from Victoria Road.

DV8’s director Dan Wallman hopes to be open by September and believes the new space will allow the creative college’s Bexhill campus to grow.

“I wanted to set up a training centre in Bexhill for young people to learn digital media skills,” he said.

“We looked at places in Hastings but I thought no, we want to support the regeneration of Bexhill and encourage business and getting people into work here.

“There aren’t many alternative options for post-16s in Bexhill that provide something really unique so we’re working with year 10 and 11s for them to learn new vocational skills.”

Dan hopes to hold gaming conventions and coding classes at the Hive, as well as having 3D printers and studios for musicians to use.

It will not just be for the younger generation as everyone will be welcome to learn new skills for a job or even just to become more confident using a computer and the internet.

Howard Martin, from Bexhill Chamber of Commerce, will sit on the board and believes the Hive will provide a creative hub in the heart of the town to balance with the De La Warr Pavilion on the seafront.
