New role as fire chief Jan takes retirement

BEXHILLIAN Jan Ingram is retiring from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service after a total of 30 years in uniform.

Jan started his fire service career with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service in 1981 after serving in the Royal Navy.

In 1987 he moved to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service in Uckfield as a Leading Firefighter and then to Bexhill in 1990 as Sub Officer in charge of the station.

Between 1990 and 2001 he moved around the service, gaining experience in training and fire safety, though always returning to Bexhill after his secondments.

In 2001 he finally left Bexhill Fire Station to take up the post of Station Manager in charge of The Ridge, St Leonards and Rye fire stations.

During the last 18 months Jan has continued his personal development as a Group Manager in charge of Learning and Development as ESFRS headquarters and then in charge of Training Delivery at the ESFRS Training Centre at Maresfield.

Jan said this week that he would like to thank his wife, Kath, sons Sean and Barry and all colleagues and friends for their support over the last 28 years.

Also, his thoughts and prayers are with all members of the Fire Service killed or injured while carrying out their duties, especially the colleagues lost a year ago in the fireworks factory explosion.

Jan is still committed to making the community safer. He will be taking up a position supporting local fire consultant Peter O'Leary of L.O.M.P. Fire Consultants in the New Year.

He says he is looking forward to developing his skills in this important area.
