New venue breathes life into summer show

THE sun had got his hat on and Bexhill and District Gardens and Allotments Society was off to a bright new start in a sun-lit fresh venue.

Show judges had criticised the low light levels at some of the society’s previous annual flower and produce shows.

But there was certainly no absence of light in the spacious hall at Bexhill High School’s new Gunters Lane campus for last Wednesday’s show. The hall has a translucent roof.

Show manager Chris Bryen was delighted with the facilities. He said: “I think it is excellent. There’s good parking facilities. There’s good disabled access and toilets.

“The light is splendid and we have got plenty of space to expand into other areas if we want.

”We have plenty of room for catering, including cream teas, and because it’s a school everything is so well thought out and well arranged. You don’t have to ask where you can do this or that because they have it all ready.”

Chris added: “Entries this year were up. We had something like 460 entries, though at 54 the number of individual entrants is down. The standard is excellent and John Phipps in particular had some excellent begonias and dahlias.”

The public, in turn, responded well to the new venue, with its abundant free parking, and visitor attendance was up.

The judges were: Domestic, Mrs C. Sanders, Mrs J. Dann, Mrs J. Moss; vegetables, Mrs F. Brown, Mrs S. Howes; flowers, Mr K. Waller, Mr D. March; flower arrangements, Mrs A. Harris; photography, Mr J. Larkin; handicraft, Mrs T. Nance; wine, Mr K. Lloyd.
