New waste treatment sites to be built in East Sussex

Sites around East Sussex could become rubbish tips as local councils set out new plans for future waste treatment plants in the county.

East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and the South Downs National Park Authority say the county needs to build around five new major sites or 15 new smaller sites to address a shortfall in its waste treatment services.

Potential sites near Bexhill, Brighton, Uckfield, Hailsham, Hastings, Polegate and Newhaven are all being considered under new plans to be put forward to government next year.

The councils are now asking residents to have a final say on the plans in a public consultation launched on Wednesday (October 27).

Cllr Carl Maynard, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and economy, said, “In East Sussex and Brighton and Hove, we have already made huge strides in encouraging more people to recycle, but to enable us to achieve the high targets we’ve set for ourselves, we need more recycling and recovery sites.

“Virtually no household waste now goes to landfill and the proposals in the plan would serve mostly commercial and industrial waste.

“The consultation is the final opportunity for people to have their say on the plan before it submitted to the Secretary of State for public examination.”

The councils say sites on the list have been chosen to avoid impacts on environmentally sensitive areas and none of them fall within the South Downs National Park.

None of the sites are being considered for landfill.

Tim Slaney, director of planning for the South Downs National Park Authority, said, “We’ve worked closely with East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council to establish the requirements for minerals and waste sites across the county, including the recycling and modern processing facilities that are required over the next 13 years.

“One of the criteria of the adopted Waste and Minerals Plan is to ensure that new major waste sites are away from sensitive areas and for this reason there are no proposed sites within the South Downs National Park.”

The councils are asking people to have their final say on the sites plans during an eight week final consultation which runs from Wednesday October 28 to Wednesday December 23.

The plan, which has been updated following public consultation last year, looks at several potential sites in the East Sussex area.

You can take part in the consultation on the council website here.

The move comes after the last landfill site in East Sussex, at Pebsham, was closed in November 2013.
