Nine year old Laura raisesfunds to help elderly people

A nine year old girl from Bexhill came up with a solo effort to raise funds to help elderly people in the area come together.

Laura Young succeeded in raising £60 which will be used by the Bexhill branch of Contact the Elderly to help fund a Christmas party for seniors.

Laura’s mum Jacqueline explained: “Contact the Elderly enables elderly people to get together once a month for tea and a chat. The elderly people may otherwise be left alone with no one to talk to and nothing to do.

“Laura had to come up with a way to raise funds and she thought of having a raffle at school. They said Laura could have her own Stall and all the money she raised would go to Contact the Elderly. Laura set up a tombola and she raised the sum of £60.

“Laura handed this money over to the elderly at a Tea Party hosted by a volunteer of Contact the Elderly and received a lovely little gift and thank you card.

“She was delighted to see the smiles on the faces of all the elderly people.”

Contact the Elderly’s Bexhill Alexander said: “We are a charity dedicated to tackling the epidemic of loneliness and social isolation among the elderly, organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people aged 75 and over who live alone, thus offering a regular and vital link of friendship.

“Each branch raises its own funds and the Bexhill branch is extremely grateful to Laura for her very generous donation of £60 which she raised by running a tombola stall at her school fete. This money will go towards our annual Christmas party and a 100th birthday party which we are planning for two of our guests early next year.”
