The interesting talk detailed the history of the Reserve and was wonderfully illustrated by colourful slides of some of the 288 species of birds recorded there.

These included spoonbills, oyster catchers, snipe, little ringed plover, avocet and many pairs of nesting sea birds.

In addition Peter had lots of natural history information. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Peter's talk and slides, he was warmly thanked and invited to join the ladies for tea.

At the next meeting - on Tuesday, June 17 - the ladies have been asked to bring an item of interest about which Mark Sivyer will endeavour to give some background details and possible value. A reminder will follow.

SOS BOX: At a recent committee meeting of the Golden Circle one member mentioned a talk given at a Townswomens Guild meeting. It was agreed the subject of the talk would be brought to the attention of the ladies of the Golden Circle.

The 19-year-old grandson of a member of the Townswomens Guild explained at their meeting that several of his fellow servicemen who do not have families had no-one to send them small necessities and gifts while they are on active service. He mentioned the kind of things that could be put into a shoe box and given to a serviceman with the British forces.

On hearing this at their last Golden Circle meeting the ladies all agreed to contribute, some will bring individual items, others a shoe box containing the items mentioned to their next meeting on Tuesday, June 17, all were grateful to Betty for telling them about this.

This is all that I know but I would be pleased to try to find out more if anyone wishes me to.

I have called this item SOS BOX to stand for Support Our Servicemen, Servicewomen will not be ignored! As no name was mentioned during the discussion I hope no-one is offended by this. Please let me know if you are.
