No payouts to ‘failing’ NHS managers says GMB

A union is calling for health bosses to be dismissed and not rewarded with payoffs if ‘change is required at the top to correct failures’.

Darren Grayson, former chief executive of East Sussex Healthcare Trust resigned from his post in July following the trust’s inadequate CQC rating in March.

Now GMB members at the trust are calling for managers who resign not to receive ‘golden handshakes’ as ‘rewards for dismal failures’.

A spokesman for East Sussex Healthcare Trust said: “Darren Grayson resigned as chief executive and is working out his notice in another part of the NHS.

“He did not receive any financial settlement.”

Gary Palmer, GMB Organiser, said: “Concerns that any further management who resign could receive golden handshakes, has resulted in GMB members calling for complete clarity around NHS money funding any potential pay-offs in rewarding such dismal failures by those entrusted to manage the NHS Trust on our behalf.

“GMB members are also calling on East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust to confirm or deny increasingly strong rumours that the trust, which includes both the Conquest and Eastbourne District General Hospitals, are to be placed into special measures potentially as soon as September.”
