No subsidy, no service say bus operators

BUS operators say services that have had subsidies withdrawn by the county council will be removed from the timetable.

That means the future of key public transport needed to get students from the outlying areas to and from Bexhill College hangs in the balance.

It was reported last week how East Sussex County Council plans to save 30,000 a year in subsidies by axing bus routes and coach services in Bexhill and Rother.

The move would leave many students without the public transport they need to get to Bexhill College.

The threatened services include the Renown Travel 303 Saturday service from Little Common taking passengers to the town centre and Sidley.

But it would also end coach services operated by Eastbourne Buses and Renown Travel from Hastings, Robertsbridge, Rye and surrounding villages to Bexhill College from September.

This week bus company bosses told the Observer that without the county subsidy they could not afford to operate the services.
