Old Town Christmas Lights

Rotten weather did nothing to dampen festive spirits in Old Town when the Christmas lights were switched on amid a flurry of wind and rain.

Pupils from King Offa primary school still showed off their dancing skills and the Old Town May Queen and Princess also attended the ceremony on Friday evening to mark the first lighting-up of the Christmas season.

Old Town Preservation Society treasurer Stanley Bullock said: "The weather was poor but it was all very English '“ we went ahead all the same and had our umbrellas there, and the children dancing and seasonal music, despite the weather, were very much appreciated."

The children were coached in the dance routines by teachers Pat and Colin King.

The event took place outside Quakersmill on the high street as a small crowd gathered for a first viewing of the lights put up by Mark Cornford.

His daughter Bella was there as May Princess, alongside Queen Mollie Sayers and the event was compered by former Town Mayor Eric Armstrong.

Stanley commented: "The lights are very much in line with what we have had before '“ we think they are very tasteful."
