Business coach with Laura Murphy: I can’t deal with social media”

Question: “I know I should be more up-to-date with social media so what’s stopping me?” Charlotte

Answer: “The short answer is, you. You know you should but you don’t want to. Until you want to you’ll always be dragging your heels whilst your competitors surge ahead.

Let’s break this down. For the vast majority of businesses, having a social media presence is essential. Some use it more than others because they have the inclination to do so, or because they employ someone who does. It’s only effective though if it’s part of an overall marketing plan.

So consider your own marketing strategy. Identify who your market is, what you’re promoting, the pricing level etc. Then consider the best route to inform your market and convert them to paying customers. Social media naturally becomes part of an overall package, rather than the monster that you’ve made it out to be.

Next analyse what it is that’s stopping you from ‘wanting to’. Is it that you don’t want the hassle of learning something new, or you don’t have the time, or IT’s ‘not your thing’? Or is it that you just don’t understand the full benefits of using it? When you know the answers you can balance the pros and cons of each and start to do something about it.

Of course at the end of it all, you still may not want to get involved with social media so that’s when you delegate. And delegation is a whole other column. ”
