Promoting local decisions

This weekend I spent a very pleasant couple of hours at a party held to thank the volunteers who help to run the village shop in Etchingham.

Strictly it isn't called the village shop but the Etchingham Community Stores and was set up after its closure as a private business. The Parish Council gave support, together with other agencies, in the set up of the Stores. Not only does it provide basic goods and services for the village, it is a good place to catch up with gossip and find out what is going on around and about. It trades healthily but still relies on volunteer staff to make up the hours.

I can't of course claim that all involved with this project are Liberal Democrats although some certainly are. However it is a good example of what we believe in. Working in the community and involving others in such schemes gives a sense of ownership and consequently can often be a good guarantee of the project succeeding.

Liberal Democrats believe that decisions should be made as close to those affected as possible. This is demonstrated by the success of Liberal Democrat run local authorities up and down the country.

This summer will see County Council elections taking place in East Sussex. Our candidates will be seeking your vote on the basis that they will work best for local interests. To that extent Councillors are given the freedom in that position to vote not purely on a party political basis but in a way which they believe will be best for the people they represent.
