Are we all in it together?

Well done to Kathryn Field and the Lib Dems for resisting the Rother Conservatives’ move to make everyone pay 20 per cent of their council tax, even if she failed to stop it being voted through.

It is true that other councils have chosen to do this already, but it does not make it right.

It was surprising to see the names of some of the other councillors who also supported the Conservative move.

It is not right to assume all will find it easy to pay this 20 per cent. Yes, there is a hardship fund people can apply to if they have problems, but why put people through this indignity?

Better by far, as Kathryn Field says, to put up the council tax, so the burden is not placed on people who are already struggling on a low income.

So which party should we see as the one which has a social conscience?

Is this not another example of not sharing the pain of the current economic situation?

This is only taking from the vulnerable and not increasing charges on the better or well off where the extra costs are more likely to be an inconvenience at most, but not give the pain it may cause the vulnerable?

Do you think it shows ‘we are all in it together’?
