Better to be safe and not sorry

People may think I am mad, but the first thing I do when I enter a high-rise building is establish where the stairs or fire escape are.

It was a programme on television some years ago which made me aware of the need to do this.

Many of us visit high-rise buildings in the course of our lives, whether it is a public building like a hospital, a hotel or an apartment block.

In the event of a fire, we are told not to use the lifts, as the electrics could be affected by the fire and we could find ourselves stuck in the lift.

So let us establish where the fire escape is and be safe and not sorry.
