Bexhill has its independent identity back

Bexhill was granted a charter to run its own affairs by King Offa of Mercia in 772 AD. In 1902 the town became a borough council and stayed that way until the local government reorganisation of 1974 arbitrarily removed the self-governing status which it had held for 1,202 years.

On Monday, 21st September, Rother District Council, to its great credit, reinstated Bexhill’s independent status by agreeing to establish a Bexhill Town Council. The vote was overwhelming with 27 councillors voting for, 6 against and 2 abstaining. No longer will Bexhill’s affairs be decided by residents of Seddlescombe, Burwash, or Ticehurst.

I should like to thank all of the many, many people, too numerous to mention, who have persisted over the last two decades or so in their attempts to restore legal recognition to the natural identity of Bexhill as a community in its own right.

Congratulations to each and every one of you, and to those who have not lived to see this day, on your very well-deserved victory.
