Bylaw should be reintroduced

I often use the promenade for walking, as do most people, but on occasions have narrowly been missed by a speeding cyclist coming up behind me and/or weaving in and out of people and small children.

The other day one young lout was riding flat out as fast as he could go, he must have been doing over 30mph - that’s enough to kill a child.

He ignored shouts from some people to slow down.

One can imagine the results of a collision, it could end in death or lifetime injury for some innocent person.

And you can bet these cyclists have no insurance, the council could be liable for damages.

When on the prom one has to constantly look both ways before walking across it, as on a main road.

This should never be, it totally spoils the experience of a leisurely walk.

It says ‘walk for health’ at certain points on the prom, as it is now, one takes their life in their hands walking along it.

Elderly people do become forgetful and could walk in front of a speeding cyclist without thinking to look both ways.

I have been a resident for 70 years in Bexhill, and I remember it was an offence to ride on the pathways and promenade.

I feel in order to help prevent accidents this bylaw should be reintroduced especially on the promenade before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.

I’m not talking about small children on their tiny bikes, it should be a safe environment for them too.

I shall be writing to the BOSO in hope they will publish it and get support.

Also, I have noticed more and more people are driving cars and vans along the promenade to gain access. I feel locked bollards are in order to prevent unauthorised use at entry points.

Any vehicle being driven off the highway is not covered by their insurance.

I’ve never seen the police on the prom... Hardly at all, walking the streets.

Its just a matter of time before a tragedy on our promenade or pavements.
