The carers really do care

As someone who worked as an activity organiser at the Mais House residential and nursing home run by the British Legion I was very saddened to read in last week's Bexhill Observer that the home had been put in to special measures by the Care Quality Commission.

Although leadership was a problem when I was there with five managers coming and going in the space of two years, there was no doubt about the quality of the care provided by the carers.

In spite of the heavy demands put upon them in a very difficult job that is not particularly well paid, they were conscientious, patient, attentive, kind and caring.

Nothing seemed too much trouble for them as they went about their work in a calm and friendly manner with good humour and smiles on their faces.

They were dedicated in making residents as comfortable, safe and happy as possible without ever seeking the recognition they deserved.

I would also say the same about the catering staff and the cleaners at Mais House.

However, I am not qualified to pass comment on the nurses, but they too seemed to work well under pressure and had a good rapport with the residents.

I cannot let this opportunity go without also praising all carers wherever they work, be it in residential homes like Mais House or visiting the elderly and vulnerable in their own homes.

With an ever increasing ageing population and recent severe East Sussex County Council cuts in adult social care, we need dedicated carers to look after us when we get old and need them.

In return they need us to stand up for them, make sure they get decent pay and conditions and give them the praise they deserve.
