A fundamental betrayal of trust

I attended the annual meeting of Rother District Council which you report (Observer, May 20).

The poignant moment was the minute’s silence in memory of Frances Winterborn.

As a former Liberal Democrat I knew Frances well and worked with her on many occasions.

The undoubted high point of an otherwise tedious and self-congratulatory meeting, was the announcement of Cllr Watson’s defection to the Tories from Labour.

That’s an awful lot of baggage you now carry councillor, the legacy of Margaret Thatcher through to David Cameron.

And it is disingenuous of Cllr Carl Maynard to suggest that somehow the Tories are apolitical.

In my time with the Lib Dems I was twice approached to join the Tories so this is an ongoing strategy to destabilise other parties.

The distinction between political role and community role is also specious – unless you are an independent.

Political parties are founded by like-minded people coming together.

To ditch those who vote for your party’s values is a fundamental betrayal of trust.

The fact is that central government measures and policies directly affect local conditions and the last six years have been dedicated to destroying public services under cover of ‘austerity’, an overtly political agenda.

Do you really want to be part of the problem councillor?
