Market mayhem

TO the best of my knowledge the Chamber of Commerce has run for years the Bexhill Annual Continental Market/ Food Fair very successfully and we expect the same during the coming weekend September 17/18. It did not cost the ratepayers a penny.

However this cannot be said for the Conservative-led council, which jumped the gun under the chairman of the Bexhill Town Centre Steering Group, Cllr Brian Kentfield, to set up their own idea of a market. This is the kind of covert operation we expect from a small group of Conservative councillors bent on making use of outside contractors, without any attempt to consult the business people of Bexhill. I expect it cost the ratepayers a pretty penny?

If the council claims that the nebulous people of Bexhill in particular (some figures please), were keen to expand this market why did it not consult with the Chamber of Commerce? I suggest the Chamber has far more experience on such matters than Cllr Kentfield.

What evidence did Rother have that this would be a sustainable monthly/weekly market if it did not include the local farming community? Its behaviour in this matter, resulted at short notice, in the closure of our long-standing monthly genuine local farmers’ market held in the Methodist Church Hall in Parkhurst Road, just off Devonshire Road. A staunch few Bexhill people supported it. it was comfortably indoors, the produce was excellent, tea was available with tables and the store holders were very friendly.
