More details for vegetarians

THE recent Valentine's Day brought forth the usual crop of advertisements for local restaurants offering special menus and the forthcoming Mother's Day will no doubt bring more.

Most of these menus list their dishes in mouthwatering detail until you get to the bottom and find that mystery foodstuff: the “vegetarian option”.

I wonder what people would think if the menu read “meat option, fish option, poultry option”? Why is it that the vegetarian dish has to be kept a secret?

Could it perhaps be hiding the fact that, for the price of a 10oz steak, pan-fried sea bass or chicken breast in white wine sauce, we vegetarians are offered a heap of rice with a couple of sliced mushrooms on top or a bowl of pasta with tomato sauce.

Come on you restaurateurs - be imaginative, be informative, but above all be honest.
