MPs need closer ties to electorate

Well, it looks as if our local MPs do need to keep closer ties with their electorate.

Theresa May has a reputation for micro management, so it will be ‘interesting’ to see how Amber Rudd copes, especially as her constituents had a higher proportion than average to Leave the EU.

A side effect of her promotion might possibly be an improvement into the shocking commuter rail system, where huge chunks of net salary go to the privilege of possibly standing for two or more hours each way, with delays and cancellations for often strange reasons and all outside of commuters’ control, yet they are the ones paying for the ‘service’. I hope therefore that Amber and other local MPs will use their influence in getting season tickets tax deductible.

I look forward to hearing that train services with longer trains and restored and improved timetables are speedily available. I don’t pretend to understand what are seemingly deep seated issues, but please, put your customers first. Sussex is a lovely place to retire to, but I could not have stomached commuting in the appalling conditions that occur now.

The UK has committed to leave the EU. Let’s expect our MPs to now do their utmost to achieve that without rancour.

I do question why, if the EU is such a wonderful institution, there is such an outrage about our decision to leave. I’m old enough to recall that we voted to join a Common Market for trade purposes, not a political union, which has gradually crept in by stealth.

The US said we would ‘go to the back of the queue’ for trade negotiations, that seemed to only last until we placed a £3 billion order for Boeing maritime reconnaissance aircraft and helicopters. We will continue to trade with Europe and elsewhere, we should have insisted on bringing the Commonwealth with us when joining the Common Market and not ditched them summarily.

As regards EU (and other) nationals, there should be no fear of ‘repatriations’, unless they are here illegally. I would suggest a points system for any new arrivals, plus DNA and fingerprinting so we know precisely who they are, and the DNA can confirm where they are from.
