Nostalgia over pub

WITH the demise of Bexhill's Bell Hotel your readers may be interested in an article in my Ward Lock Guide Book of 1913, which reads as follows:

“A story is told of a banquet held at the Bell Inn in the Old Village, in the year 1819, when the male population was considerrably under 1,000.

“Twenty-five venerable patriarchs, all over eighty-one, sat down to the feast, being waited on by fifteen others, all over seventy-one, while six youths of sixty-one and upwards enlivened the proceedings by playing a peal on the bells of the church across the way.”

The guide book also tells: “Bexhill has long been noted for the longevity of its inhabitants; indeed, it has been a standing joke that a person may live here as long as he chooses”.
