Others wonder at us

ONCE again our intrepid council has let down hundreds in its almost total neglect of side roads in the recent heavy snowfall.

No doubt central government is as usual at the heart of the matter, but when in touch with the council we are told that bus routes are a priority. Well that didn’t stop Harley Shute Road being closed for a period - that is not only a bus route but a main through road for many.

Hundreds were trapped in their own road, especially if on one of the many hills in our area whilst the few buses we did see had less than 10 people on board, so the gritting of the bus route saw many left to walk or stay at home.

What amazes me is that other countries wonder at the UK as we have a few inches of snow once, possibly twice, a year and still we grind to a standstill where others have the knowledge or the inclination and funding via their government to tackle the situation.

Where does our possibly £40billion in road fund licence money go? Obviously not towards gritting winter roads.

Where does our excessive council tax money go? Not much towards the upkeep of local roads, obviously.

How many man hours were lost in employment staff?

How many broken bones were eventually tended when an ambulance could get to the injured?

Cambridge Road and Cornwallis Gardens were another no-go area to many drivers braving Hastings and yet this is another main through road and Cambridge Road is also a bus routh although few were seen.

Let us hope that we don’t get a repeat of the snow early in the New Year as happened last year, or we will all be on an extra possibly unpaid holiday, again.
