Our allotments are moreimportant than car parks

DESPITE living memories of World War Two we have let ourselves become dependent on food imports.

We are, says Tim Lang, sleepwalking to disaster. We are only a few meals from catastrophic food shortage and hunger.

Therefore allotments and other ‘nooks and crannies’ for food are precious.

Only councils and well-organised local groups should be entrusted with administering allotments.

And as Dickie Lancaster warns we have seven plots - which means seven groups!

Do we have that many capable and willing management volunteers?

Allotments and soil are precious living treasures within our local community.

We should remove some asphalt and tiles and plant more food everywhere.

We should also have more shared gardens, whereby an elderly garden owner shares his/her soil - and its produce - with an able grower.

And the council should demand planning consent for covering front gardens.

We submit that allotments are more important than car parks.

We can walk, bicycle, and bus around town, but we cannot grow food on asphalt. Our council should tread carefully on the footpaths.
