Should be a priority

I READ with concern the article in last week's Observer about the lack of dropped kerbs on the Western Parade. What on earth does Dan Collins mean when he says '˜full height ones have been installed as a precautionary measure'!

Clearly it does not take a genius to work out that replacing these full height ones with dropped kerbs will require additional expense because of the resurfacing subsequently required. Surely all these decisions would have been made in advance and had the voices of the residents of Bexhill been heard the dropped kerbs would have been in place in the right places by now!

Let us be quite clear that this present lack of dropped kerbs affects not only the elderly in wheelchairs, but young people in wheelchairs as well, both of whom are entitled to be able to cross independently to the Parade. It also, of course, affects mothers pushing buggies, the elderly with general mobility problems and people who have impaired vision.

Let some of the councillors try pushing a buggy or negotiating a wheelchair in this area and then they may truly appreciate how much of a priority this should have been when the scheme for the Western Parade was drawn up, let alone at the eleventh hour!
