UK has reliance on immigrants

I am bewildered by the latest offering from your political analyst Stephen Jackson (Letters 12/8/16).

He always identifies the problems this country faces, but appears short on realistic solutions.

Is he seriously suggesting we should take back control of this country’s industry, which has been sold off ever since Harold Macmillan, then PM, promised ‘not to sell-off the Family Silver’ to balance the books. There is now virtually no British business that is wholly owned, and little prospect of investors, either large and small, putting national interests before personal gain.

If he is suggesting nationalising everything in sight, where are the funds? We are constantly told that there is nothing in the national bank account.

The days of British imperialism are rarely mentioned in how we became such a large influence in world affairs, but cheap imports of basic materials, military power, and many other factors are mostly ignored in defining who we are as a nation.

The fact that the English language is now universal (much to the disappointment of the French) may well explain why so many migrants want to come to Britain. It could also be something to do with our tolerance and sense of ‘fair-play’. Many of those most opposed to immigration are, judging by their names, not pure Anglo-Saxon.

When we can inspire students to tackle difficult subjects such as Maths, Medicine, Science and Engineering etc, instead of going for easy options, and get young people to work willingly at hard manual work, we may be able to reduce our reliance on immigrants. Until that day, be thankful that the NHS, care homes and many parts of the services industry are being staffed by ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and his wife.
