We are interested in safety of all

The question about the height of the parapet wall has been raised with me many times during the construction of the Link Road, and earlier last year I challenged the ESCC project team about their justification for the one-metre height.

In reply to my request the ESCC Project Team conducted a detailed safety assessment which concluded that the 1000mm height was indeed the national standard for bridge parapets over roadways.

This height is extensively applied throughout the country, and in fact is exactly the same height as the old railway bridge at Woodsgate Park.

The reason for the Heras metal fencing on the Woodsgate Park bridge over the past months was because the concrete coping stones had a defective installation and the contractor was required to rectify their work, and until that rectification had been done the protective barriers were left in place.

Naturally, the barriers were removed when the work was done and the link road was opened.

We join Vanessa Barden in her interest in the safety of all concerned and that is why ESCC has examined the matter carefully, and that is the reason for the design of the concrete coping stones.
