Hilary Rhodes has hit the nail on the head with her observations regarding the abuse by some cyclists of Bexhill promenade.

I wrote (Observer Letters) earlier this year, pointing out that the promenade is no longer a safe space for walkers to enjoy unencumbered by the threat of fast-moving cyclists.

Clearly, there is some concern amongst Bexhillians as responses ran for a further three to four weeks, mostly sharing my view.

It is not a matter of whether accidents have happened or not; it is just now no longer possible to walk along the sea front without constant surveillance of surroundings for fast moving objects.

I say this with some regret as there is also a goodly number of cyclists who do respect others and keep to a slow speed.

Perhaps there was some naïveté amongst those who sanctioned a change to the bye-laws in believing that this could successfully be a shared space.

Is it time to reconsider this?
