Why take a risk over facemasks?

From: Liz and John Sweetman, South Cliff, Bexhill-on-Sea

We are aware of the comments made by the Chief Medical Officer stating that passing the virus is smaller when outside, but we would answer – why take any risks at all? – when the wearing of masks is so easy.

Maybe the reason for the resistance to masks may well be because some think that it is yet another of the “powers-at-be” attempts at restricting our civil liberties – it surely can’t be the cost or how they look. We know that their use outside is not mandatory but with the rapid increase in cases this may well have to be reviewed. The majority of the groups we saw were not only without wearing masks, but there was little or no attempt at any form of social distancing hence our concern. We feel masks are necessary but a far more important need is for everyone to adopt the advice we’re all being given constantly that social distancing is vital if we are to halt the march of this “killer” – what we saw that Sunday on the promenade was a total disregard for others – face masks or not.

We both wear masks primarily for the protection of others we pass not mainly for our own care.

As we are both in the higher age groups our chance of getting the virus is greater than others so we have a greater chance of passing it on.

Our thoughts are of the health of our children and grandchildren and future generations and we will do all we can, no matter how small, to lessen the risks to them.
