I am sure our MP, Mr Merriman, will be consoled in the knowledge that I’m sure that I speak for the majority of his constituents when I say how delighted I am that the publicly funded and subsidised bars at his place of work are to remain open after 10pm so that he and his colleagues can continue working hard on behalf of people of this country.

I know from personal experience that after a few drinks my thoughts become appreciably more lucid and that is important, especially for those charged with ruining, sorry, running our lives.

I’m sure Mr Johnson uses this simple expediency to great effect when setting down the rules for his mercurial Covid recovery plan.

But beware, Mr Merriman, there will be a few dissenters who will accuse you and the other members of the House of being granted unwarranted privileges.

Take no notice of these resentful people. They are merely jealous because, unlike you, they are not allowed to buy subsidised booze while they are working.

Who do these people think they are - the electorate?
