Write in a plain English manner

After scanning the sports pages of the Bexhill Observer I turn to my favourite section, the readers' letters.

When I lived in Oxfordshire the local paper had a letter every, and I mean every, week from a lady who had an opinion on any topic you cared to name and was anxious to share that opinion with the rest of us.

Thirty-two years after moving to Bexhill, I still remember Jean Cox of 100 North Street, Bicester.

The Observer, too, has a couple of such correspondents.

The first of these writes to us on a range of subjects, sometimes interesting and sometimes trivial.

These letters can be understood.

This cannot always be said of the second letter-writer.

Here we find ‘one-dimensional market capitalism...ravishing Europe’.

We read of military interventions by a ‘swathe of countries from Britain to the borders of Russia’, but not including Russia, apparently. Did I imagine Ukraine?

What about ‘throwing off the yoke of Anglo-Saxon predatory capitalism and aggressive militarism’?

Isn’t that a wonderful passage?

I gather that this correspondent is a little left-wing in their views, but in order to educate others they really must write in an intelligible plain English manner.

At present the letters sound like cut-and-paste jobs from Pravda.
