Outstanding St Mary's

Outstanding in every way - that's St Mary's school and college according to a new Ofsted report.

Inspectors arrived in Wrestwood Road less than a month ago to examine every aspect of the school and have already sent their verdict that St Mary's is outstanding across the board, and provides opportunity for each student "to reach for the sky".

Lead Inspector Jeffery Plumb told youngsters: "It was a true joy and privilege to spend a day with you and to see the interesting and exciting work you do.

"We think that your school is outstanding. You make rapid gains in communicating independent choices. Your development of practical mathematical skills is also outstanding. The teaching you receive sparkles and you enjoy learning as a result.

The boarding care and the care you receive in school are excellent. You gain in confidence and independence as a result of attending this superb school."

Ofsted inspectors descended on St Mary's Wrestwood Children's Trust with less than a day's notice. They came under new regulations as a combined force to inspect every aspect of St Mary's School and College and over three days, four inspectors examined all the facets of education, social care and health services. They also checked on recruitment, governance, food and the quality of provision.

St Mary's is already well respected for the work it does with young people who have speech and language and social communication disorders, many of whom also have other complex medical or physical needs.

David Cassar, the Principal and Chief Executive, who retires at the end of this academic year, said, 'It is really an astonishing achievement, and all credit must go to the Governors, all the staff (all 280 of them), students and parents, because to get this sort of result takes loads of team work and hard graft.

"The Senior Leadership Team is the best I have ever worked with and the staff are all so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. As for the kids, well they are just an inspiration, an example to us all."

The Ofsted report said: "The Principal and dedicated staff team refuse to accept students' disabilities as a barrier to learning".

"The Trust addresses learners emotional and mental health needs exceptionally well."
