Peace couple's fast-moving protest

PEACE protesters John and Jo Dupree found on the eve of war that staging a demonstration can be a fast-moving process.

When the Observer first spotted them, their large white "Say no to war" sheet was draped over the Town Hall noticeboard.

John had just had time on Wednesday morning to tell the Observer about their protest before they were asked by the deputy Town Hall keeper to move the banner off the noticeboard because it was obscuring official council notices.

The pair hung their banner from a nearby Town Hall tree.

They were again asked to move it because the banner it was on private property.

John said:"I can't believe the Town Hall grounds are 'private property.' I thought I paid 15 a week in Council Tax to help maintain it as public property.

"Never mind, we will probably move over into Town Hall Square Gardens."

He vowed: "We will be down here every day that the war goes on.

"I don't understand how politicians can play their silly war games and kill innocent people.

"It is as if our feelings and those of millions of people across the world don't matter any more."
