Peace gets a sporting chance

FOOTBALL 4 Peace - the University of Brighton's pioneering project to promote better understanding between hostile nations - has received a £750 boost from a Bexhill school.

Year eight pupils at St Richard’s Catholic College in Ashdown Road raised £750 from sponsors after completing a series of exercise challenges earlier this year, led by ex-Harlem Globetrotter basketball star Alan Cunningham.

A group of 16 youngsters also attended a football coaches’ training day at the university, and in May the whole of year eight took part in a sponsored activity day with the focus on leadership and team building.

The money they raised will be used to sponsor three university students leaving for Israel later this month and who will work as volunteers to run joint community activity camps for Israeli and Palestinian children.

Dr Gary Stidder, co-founder of the Football 4 Peace project, spoke to St Richard’s pupils about the positive contribution their efforts would have on helping to build cultural bridges between Arab and Jewish children.
