She said: “Having attended a very interesting Lord Lieutenants Tea Party on Zoom, it has become abundantly clear to me that the role of Mayor must change to meet the current needs of our communities.

“I am not convinced the Bexhill community will be interested in where I have been each week, but they may be interested in what I have learnt.

“I think it is paramount that I use this new role to understand what is happening in Bexhill communities, businesses and voluntary organisations, and by sharing that with everyone we may just be able to see our way through the ramifications of this pandemic because we will all have a greater understanding of our community needs.

“July 4 was very significant for our hospitality trade, as cafes, hotels and pubs are now able to open with strict social distancing and sanitising measures in place.

“Despite the wind and rain our town cafes opened their doors, and I had a superb breakfast in the Cinnamon Café on Sea Road. Wonderful hospitality together with a well thought out safety plan for all guests.

“I am always humbled by the sheer effort some of our traders have gone to for their customers. They are clearly uncertain and need reassurance, but their absolute commitment to get it right despite additional costs is commendable.

“I went on to visit the Cooden Beach Hotel, which I consider to be one of our important providers supporting our tourism and leisure industry.

They employ a huge number of staff including seasonal workers, and they have really gone the extra mile to ensure visitors can still enjoy a high level of service, whilst maintaining a relaxing ambience and a range of socially interactive environments in a safe and reassuring way.

“I was particularly impressed with the younger employees who not only had to wear safety equipment for their entire shift but were aware of their role, considerate and quick to respond to cleaning areas after use. I would like to say a huge well done to the management and employees.

“These businesses need the support and cooperation from all of us, because it is about all of us.

“We must not undo what we have done, and we need to understand that life cannot return to what it was, as the threat to life still remains with us.

“I urge us all to call on that thought when we do anything in our community as we still have many members of the community who are frightened or uncertain to step outside, and their lives are equally as important if they are to retain any sense of belonging.
