Former East Sussex firefighter on the New Year’s Honours list

A former member of East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has been recognised on the New Year’s Honours list.

Bill Brewster, who retired from the service in May this year, has been awarded a British Empire Medal.

Chief fire officer Dawn Whittaker, said, “We are thrilled to hear that Bill Brewster has been awarded a British Empire Medal. Many congratulations to Bill and his family.”

The British Empire Medal rewards achievements and contributions to the local community to support innovative work which has made a real impact.

Ms Whittaker said, “Bill served in East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service for 42 years as both an operational firefighter and as the manager of our engineering services.

“He also contributed significantly to the National Fire Chiefs Council as the national lead of the Transport Officers Group and under his leadership, huge shifts were made to improve national standards and the efficiency of fire engines and appliances.

“He made a significant contribution to the fire sector both nationally and locally and it is fantastic to see him honoured in this way.”

The fire service said Mr Brewster has also made time to volunteer for the Snowflake Night Shelter charity since 2014, and for one night a week he has helped to look after and feed the homeless people on the streets of Hastings.
