Normally it is conducted in the chamber, with the Charter Trustees, past mayors, dignitaries and invited guests attending.

Cllr Harmer was joined by her husband George on the steps of the town hall to say thank you to the town, its surrounding villages, and the community for the last 12 months and to hand over the civic role.

She thanked her fellow trustees for giving her the honour of being chosen to become mayor of Bexhill.

Cllr Harmer said: “Everyone has given us such a warm welcome and we have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, a year we will never forget.

“What has really blown us away is the vast amount of voluntary organisations, charities and community groups who work tirelessly to make our town and villages so unique and special with a very strong community spirit.

“The last three months have seen big challenges with Covid-19 and for many of us our roles and lives have had to change and adapt, however the strong community spirit and extreme acts of kindness are what makes us so special.”

The departing mayor then handed over to newly-elected Mayor, Cllr Lynn Langlands.

Cllr Langlands accepted the honour of becoming mayor by reading out the declaration of office.

In another first for the town the new mayor used sign language throughout her declaration and speech.

After thanking the Charter Trustees for nominating her and the past mayor for all of her dedication and hard work, the new mayor spoke of her commitment, in whatever way she was able, to work hard with local groups, charities and businesses.

She added that she hoped the goodness within the community that had shone through during the last three months would continue, helping Bexhill to overcome the difficulties it will experience in the coming months.

Cllr Langlands then introduced Cllr Terry Byrne as her deputy mayor. Cllr Byrne thanked the Charter Trustees for the honour and spoke of his hopes for the future of the town.

Traditionally the mayor making ceremony is also used to recognise individuals and organisations for their dedication and contribution to the community, it is hoped that later in the year an alternative event will be able to be arranged so that this can take place.
