Shane travelled to an area in Surrey to capture the shot, after learning of a location which had roe deer and heather.

After finding a likely spot he waited patiently for an hour and 40 minutes and a deer appeared from the heather looking straight toward him.

Shane said: “It was about being in the right place at the right time, but you have to be patient with wildlife photography.”

Shane, aged 29, became seriously interested in photography at the age on 20. He said: “I have a passion for wildlife so the two things combined.”

Shame is a member of Hastings and Ore Photo Club. Kelvin Godfrey, from the club, said: “Shane has consistently won top prizes at our club for his wildlife pictures. Last year, he was awarded the prestigious national PAGB certificate for his entry of ten photos.

The annual Countryfile photo competition has thousands of entries each year and attracts submissions from some of the best wildlife photographers in the UK.

Shane’s photo will appear as the August image on the calendar.
