“Over the weekend, in discussion with a clinician at Public Health England, we have confirmation that there has been three further confirmed cases of Covid-19 within the academy,” the school wrote.

In her letter, principal Hilary Morawska has asked some year 10 students to stay at home and self-isolate until Monday, October 5. She said this date reflects 14 days since the students’ last known contact with an affected child.

She added: “We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of Covid-19 to others in the community.”

Although some students have been asked to self isolate after coming into contact with someone who later tested positive for Covid-19, other members of their household can continue normal activities provided their child does not develop symptoms within the two-week isolation period.

A spokesman for the University of Brighton Academies Trust which runs the school, said: “We can confirm that we have recorded more positive cases of COVID-19 at The Hastings Academy over the weekend.

“We are aware, for our parents, students and the wider community this news will be concerning so early into the new academic year, but please be assured we have taken steps to quickly reduce the risk to others within the academy.

“We are working closely with Public Health England as we continue to monitor the situation.”
