Playpark stumbling block for new surgery

A NEW GP surgery in Sidley should not be built at the expense of a children's play park if possible, decided planners this week.

The proposed new surgery will involve the loss of open outdoor space at Sidley Community Association. But councillors said although a new surgery was a priority, the developers must look at alternatives before they grant permission to annex one of the only open green spaces in Sidley.

The news will please the 78 petitioners who are opposing the plan.

Developers will be asked to explore the possibility of underground parking or building upwards instead.

Cllr Peter Fairhurst said: "I am not happy about granting permission to build over half of a well-used and much-loved play area until all possible alternatives have been explored.

"It's essential this new facility is built but also essential we support the people of Sidley and do not take this area away from them."

Councillors went against an officer recommendation to approve the scheme and deferred a decision for further negotiations.

The protest petition said: "As parents, grandparents and patients of the surgery, we strongly value the use of the play area as it provides great enjoyment for our children after school, during the holidays and whilst attending the surgery."
