Police blitz nabs 100 motorists

MORE than 100 offenders were dealt with by police during Operation Roller, the day-long crack-down on anti-social drivers by the Bexhill-based Road Policing Department.

They included a motorcyclist clocked at 92mph on the Pevensey Marsh Road and a disqualified driver who went through a red light unaware that he was being watched by officers in one of several unmarked police cars brought in specially for the operation.

Last Thursday's operation across Bexhill, Hastings and rural Rother police division was the latest phase in the on-going Operation Roller series of initiatives against anti-social and illegal driving.

Sergeant Nick Chambers, who led the operation, said that in total 16 officers were deployed at various locations across the division.

Throughout the day they stopped the drivers of a total of 131 vehicles.

Of those 103 were dealt with for a variety of offences including driving while disqualified, no insurance, excess speed, using mobile phones and no seatbelts.

"One of the disqualified drivers was stopped having driven through a red traffic light. He had been unaware of the unmarked police car and was found to have his 16-month old child in the car with him.

"The other disqualified driver was originally stopped for failing to wear his seatbelt. When arrested he was found to be a suspect for a burglary and to have warrants outstanding at court.

"Both of these drivers were arrested and will soon appear before Hastings Magistrates."

Other incidents included a motorcyclist travelling at 92 miles per hour on the A259 Marsh Road, a quantity of suspected stolen electrical items being recovered and the seizure of a knife which will be destroyed.

Sergeant Chambers said: "This is part of Sussex Police's ongoing drive to deal with illegal and antisocial driving.

"This operation will continue throughout the county and officers from the Road Policing Department will look to curb poor driving whenever possible".
