Police hunt town's arsonists

POLICE investigations into the Grand Hotel arson were stepped-up this week.

Everyone who rang police on the night or who has since made contact is being seen and interviewed, said Inspector Max Mosley and Detective Inspector Trevor Bowles, head of Rother CID.

Inspector Mosley said: "We are still making house-to-house inquiries and we are contacting everyone who made calls."

The blaze which reduced the derelict Grand to a gutted ruin (pictured left) is the fourth in the town since November. Now detectives are also investigating a fifth attack, an attempt to burn The Bedding Centre in King Offa Way.

Inspector Mosley warned: "Anyone who is involved in arson can expect the full force of the judicial system coming into play."

Detective Inspector Bowles said: "Arson is at the top end of the scale where serious crime is concerned."
