Police probe man's road death

POLICE want to trace the occupants of a car involved in a bizarre incident in which a Bexhill man died.

Andrew Mountain, 28, of Rotherfield Avenue, was injured at The Ridge, Hastings, and died two days later.

Sergeant Kevin Donovan of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit at Bexhill says he urgently needs to talk to the witnesses.

Sergeant Donovan said that at 8pm on Monday, April 7 Mr Mountain was walking at The Ridge at Baldslow, Hastings.

"A car, believed to be a small white car, possibly a Ford Fiesta, with three females in, was travelling westwards along The Ridge approaching the roundabout junction with Harrow Lane."

He said the man apparently wandered into the road into the path of the car.

"The car stopped and did not hit the pedestrian but the pedestrian fell backwards and struck his head on the kerbstone.

"The man was taken to the neurological unit at Hurstwood Park Hospital but died from his injuries on April 9.

"The small car did not stop and the driver may well have not realised what happened to the pedestrian."

The incident happened three weeks ago but police only released details this week.

Sergeant Donovan may be contacted at Bexhill police station on 01424 456085.

Mr Mountain's sister and girlfriend were this week still too distressed to talk about their loss.
