The service – which had been suspended due to the coronavirus – will resume on Monday, May 4.

As staff absence levels rose due to the Covid-19 crisis, collections were suspended at the end of March to allow Rother District Council and its contractor to prioritise household waste and recycling services.

From Monday, collections will take place on customers’ normal scheduled day.

Cabinet portfolio holder, councillor Sue Prochak said: “We have been fortunate that very few of our services have suffered significant disruption during this unprecedented crisis, but I know that garden waste customers are keen to see collections reinstated as soon as possible.

“We anticipate levels of garden waste to be significantly higher than usual when collections restart due to the service suspension, but our staff and our contractors will work hard to ensure they can deliver as full a service as possible.”

Due to the expected waste levels, residents are being asked not to put additional waste out for collection, but to hold onto to it and add it to future collections.

Existing customers who are currently being asked to renew their subscriptions, will be charged £35 instead of the increased charge of £40 due to take effect this year. The £5 discount is in recognition of missed collections and any disruption as the service re-establishes.

Council leader, councillor Doug Oliver added: “I want to assure residents that we are doing everything in our power, and within our resources, to keep disruption to all council services at an absolute minimum. However, at times we have to make difficult decisions to ensure the core and essential services that our residents rely upon can continue unhindered.

“I would like to thank all Rother residents for their continued patience, and our staff and contractors for their hard work during this extremely challenging time.”
